    Game over? Shoppers advocate for equitable in-game purchases

    On 12 September 2024, the European Consumer Organisation (BEUC) and 22 member groups from 17 countries filed a complaint to the European Commission and the Consumer Protection Cooperation Network (CPC) against major video game companies, including Activision Blizzard, Electronic Arts, Epic Games, Mojang, Roblox, Supercell, and Ubisoft. The complaint alleges deceptive practices in the marketing of popular games like Fortnite, EA Sports FC 24, Minecraft, and Clash of Clans, particularly regarding in-game purchases.

    Many games operate under a “freemium” model, where the game is free to play but revenue is generated through in-game purchases. BEUC argues that these companies use misleading tactics that violate EU consumer laws. Key concerns include;

    • unclear pricing of digital items,
    • misuse of premium in-game currencies,
    • denial of consumer rights, and
    • the targeting of vulnerable children.

    The complaint urges the European Commission to take action through stricter enforcement and new regulations to protect consumers across the EU better. More info can be found at the following link.
